The role

What you'll be doing

As a Care Assistant with Right at Home, you'll visit clients in their own homes across your local area — helping them stay independent, comfortable, and connected to the life they love.

Each visit is at least 45 minutes — long enough to give proper, unhurried care and build a real relationship. You're not there to rush through a checklist. You're there to make someone's morning better, help with a meal, give a hand with personal care, or simply share a cup of tea and good company.

You'll work with local clients near you — so most of your travel is short. Many of our team travel no more than 10–15 minutes between visits. That means less time on the road and more time for the people who matter.

"I was nervous about starting something new at 52. But from day one, I felt part of the team. The clients are lovely and the support never stops."

Questions

Common questions answered

Something on your mind? Here are the questions we hear most often.

Do I need care experience to apply?

No — none at all. We provide full training from day one. Life experience, common sense, and a kind heart matter far more than certificates. Many of our best carers came from retail, hospitality, administration, and other sectors entirely.

What training will I receive?

You'll start with a structured 3-day induction before you see any clients. After that, you'll be paired with an experienced buddy carer for your first visits. Training covers personal care, medication, first aid, and dementia awareness. You can also work towards a Level 2 or 3 Health & Social Care qualification, fully supported by us.

How flexible are the working hours?

Very flexible. We offer part-time and full-time roles and build your rota around your stated availability. You'll know your schedule well in advance — no last-minute surprises. We ask for availability either early mornings (from 7am), afternoons (from 2pm), or evenings (from 5pm), plus every other weekend.

What is the pay?

Care Assistants earn £14.20 per hour on weekdays and £14.40 per hour on weekends, with enhanced rates on bank holidays. Mileage is reimbursed at 40p per mile, and we pay a contribution towards your travel time between visits.

Do I need a car?

A full UK or EU/EEA driving licence and your own vehicle are required for this role. You'll also need business vehicle insurance — we'll guide you through how to arrange this.

What support will I get once I start?

You'll have a buddy carer alongside you at the start, a named care manager you can call anytime, and an office support team that's always available. You'll have regular check-ins with your manager and a team around you who genuinely look out for each other.

Can I try care work before committing?

Yes. We offer a taster day so you can shadow an experienced carer and see if this kind of work feels right for you — before you commit to anything.

I'm returning to work after a long break. Is that okay?

Absolutely. We welcome people returning to work after raising a family or other breaks. Our training is designed so everyone starts from the same point, and the buddy system means you'll never feel like you're finding your feet alone. You're not starting over — you're starting fresh, with full support behind you.
